Court construes claims found in patents relating to the monitoring and surveillance of computer networks for intrusion detection

SRI International Inc. v. Internet Security Systems, Inc. et al., No. 04-1199-SLR, Oct. 17, 2006.

Robinson, J.  Claim construction provided for 22 terms found in 4 patents relating to relate to the monitoring and surveillance of computer networks for intrusion detection.

The court adopts a broad construction of “network monitors” as the words are well known in the art and the patentees did not act as their own lexicographers.  The court declined to adopt defendants’ construction which did not track the language of the specification and declined to read further limitations into the claims.
